Start Streaming (No BS Guide)
Quick answer: You can start streaming today with just a computer, internet connection, and free OBS Studio. No expensive gear required. Download OBS, connect to Twitch or YouTube, add a game capture source, and hit "Start Streaming." Upgrade gear later once you know you enjoy streaming.
You want to start streaming. You've seen people do it, and it looks fun. But where do you even begin? Do you need a $2000 PC? A $500 microphone? Professional lighting?
No. You can start streaming today with what you probably already have. Here's how.
What You Actually Need
At minimum, you need:
- A computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux — doesn't matter)
- An internet connection (upload speed matters more than download)
- Free streaming software (OBS Studio — we'll get to that)
- A game or something to stream
That's it. No webcam required. No microphone required (though it helps). No fancy setup. Just start.
Step 1: Download OBS Studio
OBS Studio is free, open-source, and the industry standard. Don't overthink this. Go to obsproject.com and download it.
Don't get distracted by Streamlabs or other alternatives yet. Learn OBS first. It's more powerful and you'll understand streaming better if you start here.
We have a beginner's guide to OBS that will walk you through the basics.
Step 2: Set Up Your Stream
You'll need a streaming platform account. Twitch is the most popular, but YouTube, Facebook Gaming, and others work too. Pick one to start.
In OBS, go to Settings → Stream. Select your platform, then connect your account. OBS will handle the rest.
For bitrate settings: if you have good upload speed (5+ Mbps), use 6000 Kbps. If your upload is slower, use 3000-4000 Kbps. Don't go higher than your upload can handle — your stream will be choppy.
Step 3: Add Your First Scene
In OBS, a "Scene" is what your viewers see. You can have multiple scenes and switch between them.
Start simple:
- Add a "Display Capture" or "Game Capture" source (depending on what you're streaming)
- Add an "Audio Input Capture" source for your microphone (if you have one)
- That's it. Click "Start Streaming"
Don't worry about overlays, alerts, or fancy graphics yet. Just get something streaming first.
Gear: What to Upgrade First
Once you've streamed a few times and you're sure you want to keep going, here's the order to upgrade:
1. Microphone (If You Don't Have One)
Audio quality matters more than video quality. A $50 USB microphone will make a huge difference. Check our microphone guide for recommendations.
2. Lighting (If You Use a Webcam)
Good lighting makes a $30 webcam look like a $200 one. A simple ring light or desk lamp positioned correctly works wonders. See our lighting guide.
3. Webcam (Optional)
You don't need a webcam to stream. Many successful streamers don't use one. But if you want one, we have webcam recommendations.
4. Everything Else
Capture cards, green screens, multiple monitors — all of this can wait. Get comfortable with the basics first.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Spending too much before you start: You don't know what you need until you've streamed for a while.
- Overcomplicating your setup: Start simple. Add complexity as you learn.
- Comparing yourself to big streamers: They've been doing this for years. You're just starting.
- Not streaming because it's not perfect: Perfect is the enemy of done. Just start.
