First 60 Seconds When Chat Is Empty (No BS)
Quick answer (No BS)
Assume lurkers are watching even when chat is empty. Open with greeting → one-sentence goal → immediate action. Do not apologize for low numbers and do not sit in menus for three minutes.
Empty chat is normal under ~10 average viewers. Your job is to make the first 60 seconds understandable and watchable so the next person who clicks does not bounce.
A simple opener script
- Greeting, “Hey, welcome in.” (even to zero chat)
- Objective, “Tonight I’m climbing ranked mid / finishing this boss / building X.”
- Action, queue, load save, start the segment within seconds.
- Soft CTA, once: “Schedule and Discord are in the panels if you want next times.”
Write that objective before you go live. Use the go-live checklist.
What kills the first minute
- Silent inventory / settings scrolling.
- “Sorry nobody’s here” energy.
- Talking only to mods who are not online.
- Starting Soon screen for 10+ minutes with no update.
Talking to empty chat without sounding fake
- Narrate decisions: what you are trying, why it failed, what you will try next.
- Ask questions you will answer yourself: “Would I take this fight? Probably not, here’s why.”
- When someone finally chats, treat them like the room just woke up, greet, answer, return to gameplay.
After the first minute
Re-state the goal every 20–30 minutes. Keep BRB short. For the full retention loop, see the retention checklist.
