OBS Best Settings for Beginners
These are the optimal OBS settings for most beginners. They balance quality with performance, so your stream looks good without killing your computer.
Output Settings
Go to Settings → Output. Set the output mode to "Advanced" for more control.
Streaming Tab
- Encoder: Use "x264" if you have a good CPU (Intel i5/i7 or AMD Ryzen 5/7). Use "NVENC H.264" if you have an NVIDIA GPU (GTX 1650 or better).
- Rate Control: CBR (Constant Bitrate)
- Bitrate:
- 720p 30fps: 3000-4000 Kbps
- 720p 60fps: 4500-6000 Kbps
- 1080p 30fps: 4500-6000 Kbps
- 1080p 60fps: 6000-8000 Kbps
Don't set bitrate higher than 80% of your upload speed. Check your upload speed at speedtest.net.
- Keyframe Interval: 2
- CPU Usage Preset: "veryfast" (for x264) or "Max Quality" (for NVENC)
- Profile: high
- Tune: (leave blank for x264)
Video Settings
Go to Settings → Video:
- Base (Canvas) Resolution: Your monitor's native resolution (e.g., 1920x1080)
- Output (Scaled) Resolution: 1280x720 (720p) is recommended for beginners. 1920x1080 (1080p) if you have good hardware and internet.
- Downscale Filter: Lanczos (best quality) or Bicubic (slightly faster)
- FPS: 30 or 60. Start with 30 — it's easier on your system and internet.
Audio Settings
Go to Settings → Audio:
- Sample Rate: 48kHz
- Channels: Stereo
- Desktop Audio Device: Default (or your speakers/headphones)
- Mic/Auxiliary Audio Device: Your microphone
Advanced Settings
Go to Settings → Advanced. Most of these can stay default, but here are the important ones:
- Process Priority: Normal (or High if you have a powerful PC)
- Color Format: NV12
- Color Space: 709
- Color Range: Partial
Quick Setup by Hardware
Low-End PC (Budget CPU, no dedicated GPU)
- Encoder: x264
- Resolution: 720p
- FPS: 30
- Bitrate: 3000 Kbps
- CPU Preset: veryfast
Mid-Range PC (Good CPU or NVIDIA GPU)
- Encoder: NVENC (if NVIDIA GPU) or x264
- Resolution: 720p or 1080p
- FPS: 30 or 60
- Bitrate: 4500-6000 Kbps
- CPU Preset: veryfast (x264) or Max Quality (NVENC)
High-End PC (Powerful CPU and GPU)
- Encoder: NVENC or x264
- Resolution: 1080p
- FPS: 60
- Bitrate: 6000-8000 Kbps
- CPU Preset: faster (x264) or Max Quality (NVENC)
Testing Your Settings
After changing settings:
- Click "Start Recording" (not streaming) to test
- Play a game or do what you normally stream
- Check your CPU/GPU usage in Task Manager
- Watch the recording to see if quality is good
- If your game is laggy, lower bitrate or resolution
- If quality is bad, increase bitrate (if your internet can handle it)
Common Issues and Fixes
- High CPU usage: Use NVENC instead of x264, or lower CPU preset to "veryfast"
- Dropped frames: Lower bitrate or check your internet upload speed
- Choppy stream: Lower FPS to 30 or reduce resolution
- Game lag: OBS is using too many resources. Use Game Capture instead of Display Capture, or lower settings
Remember: Better settings don't always mean better streams. Stability and consistency matter more than perfect quality. Start with conservative settings and work your way up.
