StreamElements Overlays for Beginners

StreamElements is a free tool that provides overlays, alerts, chatbot, and other features for your stream. It works with OBS, Streamlabs, and other streaming software.

What is StreamElements?

StreamElements is a web-based platform that gives you:

• Overlays (graphics that appear on your stream)
• Alerts (notifications for follows, donations, etc.)
• Chatbot (automated chat moderation and commands)
• Widgets (recent followers, donations, goals, etc.)
• Cloud storage for your overlays

Getting Started

1. Go to streamelements.com
2. Sign up with your Twitch, YouTube, or Facebook account
3. Connect your streaming account
4. You're ready to go

Setting Up Overlays

Overlays are graphics that appear on your stream. They can include your logo, recent followers, donation goals, and more.

Step 1: Choose or Create an Overlay

In StreamElements dashboard, go to "Overlays". You can:

• Use a free template from their library
• Create your own from scratch
• Import a custom overlay

For beginners, start with a template. You can customize it later.

Step 2: Add Widgets

Widgets are the interactive elements in your overlay:

• Recent Follower: Shows your most recent follower
• Donation Goal: Progress bar for donation goals
• Chat Box: Shows recent chat messages
• Event List: Shows recent events (follows, donations, etc.)
• Stream Labels: Custom text that updates (follower count, sub count, etc.)

Add widgets by clicking "Add Widget" in the overlay editor. Drag and drop to position them.

Step 3: Add to OBS

Once your overlay is ready:

1. In StreamElements, click "Copy Overlay URL"
2. In OBS, add a "Browser Source"
3. Paste the URL
4. Set width to 1920 and height to 1080 (or your stream resolution)
5. Click OK

Your overlay should now appear in OBS. You can position and resize it as needed.

Setting Up Alerts

Alerts are animations that play when someone follows, subscribes, donates, etc.

Step 1: Go to Alert Box

In StreamElements dashboard, go to "Alert Box". This is where you configure your alerts.

Step 2: Choose Alert Types

You can set up alerts for:

• New followers
• New subscribers
• Donations/tips
• Raids
• Hosts
• Custom events

Step 3: Customize Alerts

For each alert type, you can:

• Choose an animation (they have free ones, or you can upload your own)
• Set alert duration
• Add sound effects
• Customize text and colors

Step 4: Add to OBS

Same process as overlays:

1. Copy the Alert Box URL from StreamElements
2. Add a Browser Source in OBS
3. Paste the URL
4. Set dimensions (1920x1080)

Setting Up Chatbot

StreamElements has a built-in chatbot that can:

• Moderate chat (timeout spammers, filter words)
• Respond to commands (!commands, !followage, etc.)
• Run mini-games (gambling, loyalty points)
• Send automatic messages

Go to "Chatbot" in the dashboard to set it up. It's enabled by default, but you can customize commands and settings.

Tips for Beginners

• Start simple: Don't add 20 widgets on day one. Start with recent follower and maybe a goal.
• Test your alerts: Use the "Test" button in StreamElements to see how alerts look
• Keep it readable: Don't cover important parts of your game with overlays
• Update regularly: Keep your goals and information current
• Less is more: Too many widgets can be distracting

Common Issues

• Overlay not showing: Make sure the Browser Source URL is correct and the overlay is published in StreamElements
• Alerts not working: Check that your streaming account is connected and alerts are enabled
• Widgets not updating: Refresh the Browser Source in OBS (right-click → Refresh)
